Saby Sands

December, 2008

I spent 6 months as a junior architect with Mashabane Rose Associates (MRA) in South Africa.

MRA’s work focuses primarily on museums and cultural heritage site projects (e.g. the Apartheid Museum, the Hector Pieterson Museum and the Freedom Parc), urban design schemes, as well as conservation and heritage consultancy.
Several of its proposals have been awarded first places in competitions.

My role within this studio consisted in designing competition entries as a designer architect with another Belgian junior architect, Gilbert Balinda. This designer tandem operated under the supervision of the office’s senior architect Jeremy Rose.

The Sabi Sands Tented Camp Proposal was our first conception at MRA. After designing these 5 luxury safari tents and a common facility building. Thanks to our work, MRA won this restricted competition.
